Production

Production is the process of building your song piece by piece, guiding the overall vision of your project through composition, sound design, arrangement and mixing.

What is Production?

Pre-Production

This is where the producer will look at the song form, making the composition as strong as possible before commencing recording. It involves analysing the harmony, melodies and lyrics and aligning the vision between the artist and producer.

Composition

This is where the producer will start building the song. Creating the building blocks for the song to build its foundation from. This varies from project to project, but can involve creation of drum patterns, or chord progressions and bass lines to compliment the artists vision.

Recording

This is where the artist and producer record ‘the song’. All of the main parts from the artist, piano, guitar, vocals, harmonies, main melodies, synth lines, overdubs and anything else on top.

Arranging and Editing

This is where the artist and producer shape the recording into form. Using instrumentation and sound design to control the compositional contour or the recording by adding or removing parts to build energy and clarity in parts so the song maintains a clear direction on a path to the original vision.

Mixing

At the mix stage, all recording and overdubs have been completed, and the arrangement is in place. Once the fundamental balance of individual multitrack channels has been achieved, the producer and artist add fx like reverbs and delay to create a soundscape complimentary to the vision. The end result is a great sounding song ready for the mastering process

Mastering

Mastering is about reinforcing the audio so it sounds uniform across all sound systems, levelling the frequencies so the song maintains its identity on small speakers as well as in the club, car or any other listening environment. Mastering utilises compression, limiting and EQ to add the final sheen to a product, leaving you with a song ready for release or to be transferred for physical distribution like CD or Vinyl.
